Vaisakhi 2009- will you be celebrating?

Vaisakhi 2009

This is an important celebration for the Sikh community where in 1699 the identification of the Sikh community was made known as the Khalsa. Vaisakhi this year is Monday 14th April, but many towns and cities, families and friends celebrate Vaisakhi throughout the month of April. There are lots of displays and processions, which are all good for exercising, but there is also much rich food. So what can you do?
It is important to enjoy the social and religious aspects of Vaisakhi, and that includes the food. Many dishes are fried such as samosa and pakorahs, as well as an array of sweet dishes the most popular being JALEBI. Yes of course you can enjoy these foods, but within limit. All these celebrations and rich food can see the whole family eating much more than usual. Just be aware of what you are eating and don’t forget fruit can be used in the religious as well as the social aspect too. Exercise just that bit more to compensate for extra food and just check on how much fat, sugar and salt you are using. Health is important for everyone, child, adult and people of old age. Enjoy each others company, enjoy the celebrations, but most of all cook in a healthier way.
If you have developed any low fat, low sugar recipes, take time to let us know. Let’s get some good curry recipes, for Vaisakhi and for all year round. What this space and enjoy Vaisakhi!
