Welsh schools give children a healthy start to their lives

www.grub4life.com today reports that more than 99 percent of schools in Wales are taking part in scheme to improve children’s health.08-06-2010

The scheme aims to promote health across all areas of school life through food and fitness, emotional health and personal development, school hygiene, safety and the school environment.

At a ceremony at the Urdd Eisteddfod, the Deputy Minister will present awards to schools who have gained a National Quality Award – the highest level of achievement - for their commitment to the scheme.

Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock Community School, and Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, Angelsey, are the first schools in Wales to receive the award from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Assessors visiting the award-winning schools were impressed by the efforts of staff, pupils, parents and governors to create a healthy school ethos.

These include active playtimes, and healthy food schemes, as well as initiatives to support children’s physical and emotional wellbeing like anti-bullying schemes, pupil mentoring and a range of curricular activities from road safety training, to sex education and lessons about the dangers of substance misuse.

The ultimate purpose is to educate children about healthy lifestyles, so that these habits stay with them throughout their lives.

The Deputy Minister also joined a group of children in a healthy eating cooking class on the Assembly Government-funded Cooking Bus at the Urdd Eisteddfod.

The Cooking Bus tours primary schools offering children and parents with ideas on making simple, healthy meals. It shows how easy and enjoyable it can be for people to cook healthy meals.

Making healthy options seem easy and appealing can give children and young people the best start to their lives.
