NHS braced for mini baby-boom after cold winter

www.grub4life.com today reports that the NHS is bracing itself for a mini baby-boom this Autumn after the cold winter sparked a rise in conceptions, it has emerged. 29-08-2010

There has been a surge in the number of pregnant women coming forward for antenatal care with their babies due in the next few weeks - nine months after one of Britain's coldest spells.

Couples snuggled up in the warm as much of the country lay under a thick layer of snow that lasted from mid-December to mid-January.

Hospitals have begun preparations for a busy month on the labour wards after realising they were seeing more women than usual earlier in the year for their 12 -week scans.

Over the longer term there has been a general rise in birth rates since 2001 putting extra pressure on maternity services.

In 2008 there were 708,711 babies born in England and Wales, 19,000 more than the previous year.

Since 2001 there has been a 17 per cent rise in the number of babies born.
