Coeliac Awareness Week - 12th-18th May 2008

Food without fear: The 12th-18th May is Coeliac Awareness Week and the focus of this year’s campaign is to make eating out easier for people with Coeliac disease.30-04-2008
The only treatment for this auto-immune disease is a gluten free diet, gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Although there’s a very good range of gluten free products available in supermarkets these days, it can still be extremely difficult for people following a gluten free diet to be sure food is truly gluten free when they are ordering from a restaurant menu.
Some of the most common symptoms of the disease include, weight loss, anaemia, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fatigue. If you suspect you may have an adverse reaction to any food it’s essential that you contact your GP or a Registered Dietitian for advice.
